Making Time for Yourself: Learning American Mahjong and Finding Community The speaker encourages women to reflect on when they last did something just for themselves and shares her experience taking an American Mahjong class as a way to carve out personal time. Expecting a bright, sterile, instructional setting with many attendees, she was surprised by a dim, calming atmosphere with music, snacks, flavored water, and only four students plus the instructor. She put her phone away to avoid interruptions, learned the history, rules, etiquette, tiles, and “rack it” rule, and found the game more thoughtful than Bunco while still social and fun. She enjoyed the camaraderie and sense of community with other women, planned Mahjong as a winter activity in Michigan, and later signed up for Mahjong 102 because she missed the group and found it addictive. She invites listeners to try any class or activity they’ve been considering and to share ideas to build a community. 00:00 Do Something For You 01:25 Signing Up For Mahjong 02:31 A Calming Class Vibe 04:10 Learning The Basics 06:07 Bunco Versus Mahjong 07:33 Laughs And First Wins 08:14 Community With Women 10:05 Hooked On Level 102 10:35 Your Sign To Try 11:35 Plans And Farewell
